11th: The Big Brook Fossil Hunting Adventure!
Alex
led the grove into Big Brook, a local stream and one
of the premier fossil-bearing locations in the United States, to look
for evidence that yes, indeed, sharks once swam where we stand now.
16 walked through the woods and waded into the water. We sifted the
sand and pebbles and mud and found millions-year-old shark teeth and
fossilized squid bits, while Alex identified stuff and told us what
to look for. We
reveled in the evolutionary theory of Darwin and the stratigraphic theory
of William Smith--and got cool, weird, free stuff for our houses! It
was a lovely, warm afternoon in the water. Lots of fun. Then we enjoyed
a diner. (Photos: Daphne and Ed.)
